Recently the Village has become aware of complaints and issues regarding the Animal Welfare League and its building in Chicago Ridge.
As allowed by law, Village representatives have investigated the allegations in a thorough and comprehensive manner. After consultation with the Village attorney, we have been advised that the jurisdiction for regulation of the Animal Welfare League rests with the Federal and the State Departments of Agriculture, as well as parts of Cook County Government. Our Village’s only regulatory authority for the Animal Welfare League rests with our Building and Health Enforcement departments and as we have always done, we will continue to enforce our health and building codes to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Further, as the Mayor and Elected Officials of Chicago Ridge, we call upon our elected colleagues: U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Congressman Dan Lipinski, State Senator Bill Cunningham, and State Representatives Kelly Burke and Fran Hurley, to investigate and demand that the appropriate departments enforce all relevant laws immediately to ensure the health and welfare of the animals at the Animal Welfare League.
We will immediately be sending this letter to the elected representatives referred to. We would ask that those of you who are concerned with this issue assist us by directing your efforts toward the appropriate elected officials and especially the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
